Greenhouse questions, answered
Polycarbonate panels are shatter-resistant, so they are safer around children and pets, and twin-wall panels hold heat better. Glass is clearer and looks traditional. Most of our greenhouses use polycarbonate; our Shire wooden greenhouses use glass.
6x8ft is the most popular size and suits most gardeners. Go for 6x4 or 6x6 for a small garden or a first greenhouse, and 8x12ft or bigger if you want to grow a lot or have room to work inside. Each product lists its full dimensions and height.
Aluminium frames are light, strong and won't rust, and come in the widest choice of sizes and colours. Resin frames stay warmer than metal and never need painting. Wooden frames look traditional and can be painted or stained, but need treating every year or so.
Mostly it is about looks. Green blends into the garden, silver is the classic aluminium finish, and grey gives a modern, darker look. Each colour is the same greenhouse, so pick the one you like best.
A firm, level base such as paving slabs, concrete or a matching base kit. The greenhouse should be anchored down so it stays put in strong wind. Our Greenhouse Accessories collection has base and anchoring kits for the Palram range.
In England, most greenhouses count as permitted development, so you will not usually need planning permission. Limits apply, for example a total height of 2.5m or less within 2m of a boundary, and different rules apply to listed buildings, conservation areas and flats. If you are unsure, check with your local council.
No. Every greenhouse arrives needing assembly, and we recommend two people. If you have any questions before you order, call us on 0330 043 0361 (Mon–Fri 8am–5pm).
